The Lord Milner Hotel History

A Brief History of Lord Milner

Alfred Milner, 1st Viscount Milner, KG, GCB, GCMG, PC (March 23, 1854-May 13, 1925), was a controversial German-born British statesman and colonial administrator.

Alfred Milner was appointed High Commissioner for Southern Africa and Governor of Cape Colony in 1897. It was in South Africa where Lord Milner spent a large majority of his life, formulating a policy that was to try and combine the upholding of British interests with an attempt to deal justly with the Transvaal and Orange Free State governments of the time.

Milner died in Sturry Court, near Canterbury on May 13, 1925 of sleeping sickness soon after returning from South Africa. His viscountcy, lacking suitable heirs, died with him.
